The links on the side of this page provide access to our online color brochure. Tarleton State University (TSU) is the second oldest and largest school in the Texas A&M System. The Department of Math, Physics, and Engineering offers a wide range of challenging programs including Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Hydrology, Engineering Physics, and Environmental Engineering. The Physics program at TSU includes several unique tracks including an Astronomy track and a Medical Physics track for students interested in preparing for advanced study leading to employement as a Medical Physicist in Theraputic Radiation or Medical Imaging or as a Medical Doctor. Another alternative include includes adding two additional courses in your field of study (Chemistry, Biology, Math, or Computer Science) and obtaing two BS Degrees. The Department also offers an ABET accredited Engineering Physics program. This interdisciplinary program combines electrical/computer engineering, material science, and physics and is one of only four accredited programs in the Southwest (OU, Tulsa, and Texas Tech).
As an undergraduate physics program, our faculty are dedicated to providing quality teaching and superior undergraduate research experiences to our students. The Department also offers undergraduate research facilities unmatched by any undergraduate institution in Texas including a State-of-the-art Scanning Electron Microscope with 35 angstrom resolution, one of only three undergraduate tandem accelerator facilities, and the largest telescope of any undergraduate institution in the US. These facilities provide opportunities that make our students very competative and allow them to obtain research fellowships at National and Department of Defense labs as well national scholarship competitions. Past graduates have obtained maedical degrees as well going on to successful graduate study at Rice, Stanford, Duke, and other fine institutions both in the US and Japan.
In addition to the courses taught locally on the TSU campus, we also offer access to additional physics and nuclear engineering courses taught on other Texas A&M System campuses through the Texas Electronic Coalition for Physics (TECP).
Secondary Teaching
The TSU Physics program provides two secondary teacher certification tracks depending upon your interest. The 8-12 MATH/PHYS track is designed for students interested in dual certification as a Math and Physics teacher. The PHYSICAL SCIENCE track is designed for students interested certification as a Physics and Chemistry teacher.
Scholarships and Cost
TSU remains one of the least expensive schools in Texas and offers a wide range of need based financial aide. TSU also offers competative academic scholarships including four year $28,000 Presidential Scholarships. The Department also provides additional support to students including research assistantships.
